Colorful CSA

This week's box is packed with color and flavor. We have gold and red raspberries, gold or candy cane striped beets, luscious red tomatoes, vibrant orange carrots and a great assortment of greens. We have two colorful recipes this week to celebrate. Try Jeff's favorite Romano Ragout or enjoy authentic Greek Tomato Salad.
New this week is Joi Choi. It is a hybrid between chinese cabbage and bok choy. It has a bit of a mustard bite that is great raw or can be tamed by cooking. It is a staple in chinese cooking, often braised, stir fried or used in soups. Its leaves are an intense dark green and very high in beta carotene. Here is some more information about Joi Choi and how to prepare it.

Small Shares
1/2lb salad mix, 2 tomatoes, 1 cucumber, 1/2lb spinach, 1 Joi Choi, 1/2lb Romano beans, 1/2 pt golden raspberries.

Medium Shares
Same as the smalls with more salad mix, tomatoes, cucumber, spinach, Romanos and raspberries. Plus, there will be carrots and turnips.

Large Shares
Same as the medium box but more salad, tomatoes, cucumber, carrots, Joi Choi and Romanos. Instead of 2 gold raspberries, larges will get one gold and one red raspberry 1/2 pint. They will get 1lb arugula instead of the spinach. In addition, they will get onions and beets.

While I am generally very, very happy with your quality and service, I am sick of the salad mix.
The quality and shelf life are variable. This week I ended up composting mine, and I usually eat everything in the box.

It takes a lot of energy to produce salad mix for marginal return, low shelf life etc. I would rather receive arugula - better quality and shelf life, or head lettuce.

I suggest at least mixing things up a bit, and not including salad mix every week.

Thanks for listening. Barb

Dear Barb
Thank you for your comments you posted on our blog in regards to our salad mix. It is very important that we receive feedback on our products and service so we can continually strive to provide our customers with the best produce possible.
Unfortunately, farming is not an exact science and for as hard as we try to make everything perfect sometimes it is just does not work out that way. We apologize for the inferior salad mix and any inconvenience it may have caused. Bean will be contacting you directly to make things right with you.
Many of our C.S.A. customers absolutely want salad mix in their box every week, so we have treated it as a staple. This years winter C.S.A. program has an option to totally customize each weeks box, so you can order and receive exactly what you want for that week. We try to please everyone... and adding this customization to our program will hopefully bring us one step closer to our goal. We are grateful for your continued support and look forward to providing you with yummy winter produce.
Sincerely,
Jeff and the staff at Willie Greens

I LOVE the salad mix. It's the best part. You do have to eat it quickly, but that's the nature of the vegetable!!! I do wish there was more fruit, but the quality of the produce has been good. Although a couple of times my carrots were a little limp, I just refreshed them in some water and they were good to go.
